Shed Removal by Material
A shed's material decides the tools, the crew size and where the pieces end up. Cost guides agree that wood-framed sheds are the cheapest to bring down and metal ones cost more.

Wooden sheds
A typical wooden shed is stick-built: 2x4 framing, plywood or T1-11 siding, asphalt shingles on top. The crew strips the shingles, then cuts the walls into panels a pair of people can carry. A rotten floor or a sagging roof slows things down, since a frame that's already failing can drop without warning. Shingles and treated lumber both count as construction debris. In North Carolina it is illegal to burn a shed, treated wood or shingles, so tearing it down and hauling it is the legal route.

Metal sheds
Kit sheds of galvanized steel or aluminum come apart with a drill, a socket set and penetrating oil. Long rows of small screws and sharp panel edges make it slower than it looks, which is why national guides price metal sheds above wooden ones. The upside is scrap value; ask whether the hauler takes the panels to a scrap yard and credits it, and see scrap metal pickup for loose metal on the same visit.

Resin and plastic sheds
Resin sheds are molded panels that snap or screw into a floor base. Taking one down runs assembly in reverse: unbolt the roof, lift out the wall panels, pull the floor. Sun-faded panels can crack as they come apart, which only matters if someone wants to reuse the shed. If it's sound, listing it free for pickup can save the fee entirely.

Shed contents
Most sheds come down full. Clearing the contents runs about $150 to $500 or more on top of the teardown in national guides. Set aside paint, fuel cans, pesticides and propane tanks before the crew arrives, since haulers turn them down (drop-off options on the homepage). Old mowers need their gas and oil drained first; see lawn mower disposal.

What Changes a Shed Removal Quote
Size
Angi puts shed removal at $3.50 to $11.50 per square foot, with many companies charging a $250 minimum even for small sheds.Foundation
A shed on blocks or gravel costs much less to clear than one on a poured slab. Get the slab as its own line on the quote.Power or water
A shed with wiring or plumbing needs an electrician or plumber to disconnect and cap it first. Guides put electricians at $50 to $130 an hour, often with a $150 to $200 minimum.Age
Angi warns that sheds built before 1970 with cement panels or cement roofing may contain asbestos and need testing before anyone breaks them up.Access
A shed at the far end of a narrow yard means every panel is carried farther.
Shed Demolition Permits in Winston-Salem
The City of Winston-Salem's Inspections Division issues residential demolition permits. On its April 2026 fee schedule, demolition work valued up to $5,000 costs $100, and the application tells applicants to get a separate permit from Forsyth County Environmental Affairs as well. The form doesn't say which small outbuildings need one, so ask the hauler, or call the Inspections Division, before the walls come down. Lumber and shingles from the teardown go where other building debris goes; see construction debris removal.
See deck removal if a deck or ramp is coming out with the shed.
