Construction Debris by Material
Two loads that fill the same space in a truck can be priced far apart, because of what's in them. Drywall and framing are bulky but manageable; shingles, tile and concrete fill the weight limit long before they fill the truck.

Drywall and framing scraps
Wallboard and studs from a remodel are the lighter end of construction debris. Break full sheets down so they stack flat, and pull out anything that isn't building material: paint cans, caulk tubes and old fluorescent tubes all need a different route. The county's yard waste sites take only untreated wood, so painted or treated offcuts stay with the construction debris.

Roofing shingles
Tear-off shingles are dense. Price them by weight, not by how small the pile looks on a tarp. Burning them is not an option: North Carolina lists asphalt shingles among the materials that may never be burned, with fines up to $25,000.

Bathroom and kitchen remodel debris
Tile, mortar bed, old toilets, vanities and countertops come out of a bathroom or kitchen gut. Angi notes that many states count a toilet as construction debris, not household junk. If the cabinets and tub are still in place, that is a tear-out first; see light demolition.

Concrete, brick and block
A busted patio, old steps or a stack of block from a torn-down planter. Concrete weighs more than wood or drywall, so expect a separate price or a smaller load. Tell the hauler whether it is already broken into pieces two people can lift.

Why Winston-Salem homeowners call Winston-Salem Junk Co.
- Your request goes to a single independent hauler
- Hear the all-in figure before anything is carried out
- Calling is free; the hauler bills only the job you OK
- Mention stairs, a gate code or a hot tub when you call
Where Construction Debris Goes in Forsyth County
Construction and demolition waste has its own landfill here. The City's bulky-item pickup refuses construction materials, so the options are a hauler or your own trip (homepage for the curbside rules).
Old Salisbury Road Landfill
3336 Old Salisbury Road. Construction and demolition waste only, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The City expects it to have room until about 2030.Hanes Mill Road
The household landfill also accepts construction debris, which is useful on a Saturday morning when Old Salisbury Road is closed.Fluorescent tubes and mercury thermostats
North Carolina treats every construction and demolition landfill as unlined, and these are banned from unlined landfills. Keep them out of the debris pile.Asbestos
Suspect pipe wrap or old floor tile goes through Forsyth County Environmental Affairs at 336-727-8064, not a junk truck.
Tipping fees at both landfills are per ton; the homepage cost section lists the fiscal 2027 rate.
Pricing a Debris Haul
A good quote names both the volume and the weight it assumes. Ask:
Is the dump fee included?
Heavy loads cost the hauler more at the scale, and that should be in the number you agree to.Is there a weight cap per load?
A load of concrete may be capped well short of a full truck.Does loading include carrying from the back yard or a second floor?
Stairs and long carries add labor. Can mixed debris go together?
Wood, drywall and tile can usually share a load; paint and chemicals can't.
Contractors and job sites
Remodelers, roofers and handymen with a trailer half full of tear-out sometimes pay to have it taken instead of losing an afternoon at the scale house. Give the hauler the job address, when the site is open and where the pile sits, and ask whether they can come back on a set day each week while the work runs.
See shed removal when the debris is still standing as an old outbuilding.
