Furniture Donation Pickup: What Each Charity Takes

Furniture a ReStore can resell
Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County runs ReStores at 608 Coliseum Drive and 2551 Peters Creek Parkway, and it sells donations at 25% to 75% off retail. The standard pickup is free: book it online or through the hotline at 336.893.8494, and two team members come in a ReStore truck. Pickup hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop-off hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Mondays. A piece must work and have no missing hardware, deep scratches, stains, tears, strong odors or pet hair. The ReStore gives a donation receipt.

Items for Goodwill
Goodwill of Northwest North Carolina takes usable furniture, flat-screen TVs, housewares, books, and computers in any condition. It asks for furniture to come to its retail stores where possible, and its paid partner ReSupply handles home pickups within 48 hours, stairs and disassembly included. Goodwill won't put a value on what you give, so keep your own list with photos. Clean pieces sell faster, which is the whole point for the store: wipe down wood, vacuum cushions and tape loose hardware to the piece.

Pieces charities turn down
Both charities refuse more than people expect:
- ReStore. Sleeper sofas, entertainment centers, desks over 36 inches, appliances over 10 years old, foam or stained mattresses, linens, ladders, used toilets and tubs.
- Goodwill. Mattresses and box springs, torn or soiled upholstery, large appliances, CRT TVs, building materials, and recalled items such as cribs, car seats and exercise equipment.
Those pieces need a paid route. Old TVs go through electronics disposal, mattresses through mattress disposal, and refrigerators and washers through appliance removal.

Mixed donate-and-dump loads
Most houses have both. The ReStore's paid priority pickup will haul away items that fail its guidelines, with landfill fees added, and it can take furniture apart for an extra charge. A hauler does the same sorting in one visit and can drop the good pieces at a charity, so ask whether donation runs cost extra and where each pile ends up.

Why Winston-Salem homeowners call Winston-Salem Junk Co.
- Your request goes to a single independent hauler
- Hear the all-in figure before anything is carried out
- Calling is free; the hauler bills only the job you OK
- Mention stairs, a gate code or a hot tub when you call
